What is Introduction to Orthodontic Biomechanics?
It is a self-paced, interactive module devoted to orthodontic biomechanics and all the fundamental principles that involve some sort of tooth movement. Learn about static mechanics, cantilevers, segmented mechanics, optimized straight wire system, and more, to improve your treatment outcomes!
Meet Your Instructor:
Jean-Marc Retrouvey, DMD, MSc, FRCD(C)
Dr. Jean-Marc Retrouvey is the former Department Chair and Professor of Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, USA. He has been involved in developing an interactive curriculum to improve the diagnostic skills and treatment planning of orthodontic cases for over 20 years.
Dr. Retrouvey lectures internationally on the importance of correct diagnosis of dental malocclusions as well as the use of optimized biomechanics.
He is an examiner for the Royal College of Dentists of Canada (RCDC), an advisor for the National Dental Examining Board of Canada (NDEB), a Fellow in the Académie Dentaire du Québec (ADQ), and the past president of the Canadian Association of Orthodontists (CAO).
What our Participants Say
"I really appreciate that Dr. Retrouvey values the basics and foundation of orthodontics. This is the only course I found that started from a very systemic approach to the subject."
- Dr. Tina C.
"Over the years I have attended many different courses. Some of them are focused on a specific topic, but most of them are organized by different companies and have a clear bias. Courses that give you knowledge about the patient's exam, diagnosis, and treatment plan, and the way of understanding ... all of this is a rarity, giving every detail the attention it deserves."
- Dr. Michaila N.
"I attended your biomechnanics Webinar and I did love it. Your lectures are so detailed and engaging."
- Dr. Nha-Uyen C.
Such an amazing lecture by a humble and knowledgeable Professor in Orthodontics, Prof Dr Jean-Marc Retrouvey, this evening. The number of attendees was booming and we hosted more than 1000 orthodontists and residents from all the inhabited continents across the world.

What Will You Learn in Orthodontic Biomechanics?
Module 2 covers orthodontic biomechanics in a simplified and approachable way for the busy practitioner. It emphasizes the application of concepts for the modern clinical practice.
It introduces the basics of biomechanics as applied to orthodontic tooth movement in malocclusions of moderate severity. Basic concepts such as force systems, center of resistance, simple vector mechanics, and individualized tooth movement are presented. The straight wire system and some of its variations are discussed.

INTRODUCTION: Orthodontics is built upon basic principles of physics, concerning moving bodies in space. Of course, the movements in orthodontics are made more complicated, as these moving bodies are in the mouth and are subject to more complex force systems than simple mechanics can predict. Biomechanics is an important part of orthodontics and is the study of static equilibrium, and the effects of forces on biological systems. This text will attempt to simplify the biomechanics of orthodontics and provide a framework for clinical applications.

What Follows Orthodontic Biomechanics?
After completing Module 2, participants may continue with Adult Orthodontics – Aligner Therapy (Module 3).
The primary objective of Module 3 is to expose the dental professional to the systematic approach of malocclusions in non-growing patients. The secondary objective is to discuss the role of orthodontics in the management of the aging and restored dentition.
In the next Module 3, Adult Orthodontics – Aligner Therapy, participants will learn to:
- Differentiate between the adolescent and the adult dentition.
- Understand and recognize periodontal considerations in orthodontics.
- Correctly diagnose and approach the aging dentition.
- Describe orthodontics-periodontics treatment.
- Describe orthodontic-prosthodontic treatment.
- Understand the concept of the interconnected approach to treatment.
- Diagnose and create a problem list for patients in need of aligner treatment.
How Many Modules are in the Orthodontic Management of Moderate Malocclusions Course?
The course is presented in 6 modules that are taken individually. We recommend that dental practitioners with orthodontic training take the modules in the numbered order, starting with 1A, as the content has been designed to build on the knowledge learned in the previous modules. Orthodontists may take any module as a stand-alone course.
