Jean-Marc Retrouvey, DMD, MSc, FRCD(C)


Dr. Jean-Marc Retrouvey is the former Department Chair and Professor of Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, USA. He has been involved in developing an interactive curriculum to improve the diagnostic skills and treatment planning of orthodontic cases for over 15 years.

Dr. Retrouvey lectures internationally on the importance of correct diagnosis of dental malocclusions as well as the use of optimized biomechanics.

He is an examiner for the Royal College of Dentists of Canada (RCDC), an advisor for the National Dental Examining Board of Canada (NDEB), a Fellow in the Académie Dentaire du Quebec (ADQ) and the past president of the Canadian Association of Orthodontists (CAO).

Facial Analysis

Learn to correctly analyze facial features prior to treatment, and assess the need and possibilities of changes with orthodontic intervention --- integral parts of treatment planning.







Functional Examination

Learn about the patient questionnaire, the assessment of neuromuscular balance, and the stomatognathic system examination.




Intraoral Examination

Learn about the hard and the soft tissues of the oral cavity from an orthodontic perspective, and how to compile observations in an orthodontic examination chart.

Dental Cast Analysis

Learn to present measurements to be performed on a dental cast, record different parameters, add measurements to perform the intraoral analysis, validate measurements obtained in the intraoral analysis, and quantify the severity of the malocclusion.

Panoramic Examination

Learn to analyze normal development of the dentition and root positioning from a panoramic radiograph perspective, and observe anomalies of development and pathologies, which are related to orthodontics and may impact the treatment outcome.

Cephalometric Analysis

Learn to recognize anatomical structures of interest, position points relevant to the cephalometric analysis, trace the correct reference planes, measure angles and distances, compare these to established norms, and arrive at a cephalometric diagnosis of the observed malocclusion.

Upon successful completion of Module 1A, you will be able to:


  • Discuss the importance of timing of treatment and the early detection of malocclusions
  • Classify occlusion according to Angle principles
  • Recognize factors that contribute to the development of a malocclusion
  • Discuss transverse, anteroposterior, vertical discrepancies
  • Discuss the goals of orthodontic treatment
  • Recognize when orthodontic treatment should be initiated
  • Discuss eruption problems
  • Motivate patients to comply with treatment
  • Motivate patients to maintain effective oral hygiene

What Follows Orthodontic Diagnosis and Treatment Planning - Theoretical?


After completing Module 1A, participants may continue Orthodontic Diagnosis and Treatment Planning - Applied (Module 1B) which focuses on building the participant’s practical skills.

Module 1B offers a more interactive learning approach with in-depth exercises, group discussions, diagnosis and treatment planning sessions, and live webinars. Participants have the opportunity to present their own case presentations.

In the next Module 1B, participants will learn to:


  • Fabricate dental casts to orthodontic standards
  • Obtain interocclusal records
  • Interpret radiographs
  • Perform a basic cephalometric analysis
  • Perform an orthodontic examination
  • Prepare a treatment plan
  • Present a treatment plan to a patient

How Many Modules are in the Orthodontic Management of Moderate Malocclusions Course?


The course is divided into 6 modules that are taken individually. Each module requires separate registration. We recommend that dental practitioners with orthodontic training take the modules in the numbered order, as the content has been designed to build on the knowledge learned in the previous modules. Orthodontists may take Module 2 as a stand-alone course.

Who developed the continuing education course?

The IFDE, under the leadership of Dr. Jean-Marc Retrouvey, is responsible for the course development and the creation of all online modules including but not limited to lessons, activities, videos, webinars, exercises, and quizzes. What are the prerequisites?

For Module 1B, the prerequisite is Module 1A.

Module 2 may be taken by orthodontists as a stand-alone course. For dentists outside U.S and Canada, we encourage you to begin with Module 1A, and take the modules in the numbered order, as the content has been designed to build on the knowledge learned in the previous modules.

How many study hours is Module 1A, and how long does it last?

Module 1A should take approximately 30 hours to complete. The module is designed to require about 30 hours of effort, however the time frame and actual effort may vary from one individual to another.

Is IFDE an ADA CERP recognized provider?

Yes.

Will I receive CE Credits for Module 1A?

Yes, after successfully completing Module 1A, a verification of participation document will be issued. IFDE™ designates this activity for 30 continuing education credits.

How long will I have access to Module 1A?

Your access to the online module will be available for twelve (12) months from the date of purchase. It is a completely self-paced online Module.
